The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Lagos State Council has presented an Award of Excellence to the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC), for its outstanding contributions to the development of the maritime sector.
At the official presentation on Monday in Lagos, the Lagos NUJ Chairman; Mr. Adeleye Ajayi described the award as well-deserved.
Speaking on the award, he recalled that, “the Gala/Award Night was held on October 22, 2021 at the Lagos Airport Hotel and we understood that the Executive Secretary was unavoidably absent and on an official assignment and so could not grace the occasion to receive this distinguished award.
“Today is an auspicious moment to receive the award.
“We share your mission of contributing optimally to the economic development of the nation while protecting the rights and interests of all stakeholders in the transport sector in line with best practices.
“The Shippers’ Council has also lived up to expectations in being the foremost economic development agency providing regulatory system that fosters efficient, effective and competitive service delivery in the transport sector,” Ajayi said.
According to the NUJ Chairman, your council is working in tandem with your mandate of establishing an enabling environment for all stakeholders by instituting an efficient and effective economic regulatory system in the transport sector.
“Everyone will agree with me why the Shippers’ Council was conferred with an additional mandate of playing the key role of the port economic regulator.
“In line with the Federal Government port reform agenda, I recall with nostalgia that your council was appointed the Port Economic Regulator in February 2014, to create effective regulatory regime at the Nigerian ports for the control of tariff, rates, charges and other economic services.
“Today, your council has performed creditably well in its port economic regulatory role.
There is of course, the need to protect investments in the maritime sector which I am sure informed the Federal Government’s decision to appoint the council as port economic regulator.
“There is also need for the investors to be protected from unstable government policies and to create conducive environment for port investors to operate.
We are also aware that the Shippers’ Council performs mediation role among stakeholders and establish accessible and modern dispute resolution mechanism and ensure that Nigerian ports operate at global standards” Ajayi said
In his reaction, Rt. Hon Emmanuel Jime, Executive Secretary/Chief Executive Officer of Nigerian Shippers’ Council said the council was happy to receive the Award.
“The Nigerian Shippers’ Council had a management retreat over the weekend in Abeokuta, Ogun State, and one of the key resolutions at the event was the decision to have robust relationship with the press in order to achieve our mandate.
“It is also our desire to also be a foremost economic regulator in the Nigerian transport sector.
“On behalf of the management and staff of Nigerian Shippers’Council, I thank you for deeming it fit to have considered us for the Award.
“To whom much is given, much is expected.
“We wiill ensure that Nigerian Shippers’ Council will deliver a maritime model it will be proud of.

“With this award, you have challenged us to be the best in the maritime sector.
“I want to assure the rest of the maritime community that the Council will not shy away from its responsibility and also bring standardization to the delivery of maritime services.
“We will need the services of the press and I invite you to be partners in the journey to ensure our smooth information flow.
“We’ll ensure that whatever the Press needs in terms of information is given out so that Journalists can carry out their patriotic duties and
in the end, we will have a maritime space to be happy with.
Also in attendance at the presentation was Mrs.Rakiya Dhikru-Yagboyaju, Head, Public Relations Department of Nigerian Shippers’Council, and some executive members of NUJ, Lagos Council.
