The race to find a new International Maritime Organization secretary-general is underway with the confirmation last week by Japan that Koji Sekimizu, the current IMO maritime safety division director, would be put forward as a candidate to take over from current secretary-general Efthimios Mitropoulos.
Koji Sekimizu who appear to be the only candidate to have declared interest so far is expected to be presented as a candidate in the next IMO election which is to be held in June 2011.
Current Secretary General, Efthimios Mitropoulos, is expected to vacate seat in December 2011.
