FG To Commission Onitsha River Port This Week

Barring any last minute cancellation, there are confirmations that the much-expected commissioning of the Onitsha River port will come up this week, and it will be done by President Goodluck Jonathan as part of his one day visit to Anambra state.
Sources at the ministry of transport confirmed to Shipping Position Daily last week that the President will commission the N4, 666,481,591.90 River port which is expected to serve as a port of departure and embarkation of passengers and goods using the River Niger.

Barring any last minute cancellation, there are confirmations that the much-expected commissioning of the Onitsha River port will come up this week, and it will be done by President Goodluck Jonathan as part of his one day visit to Anambra state.
Sources at the ministry of transport confirmed to Shipping Position Daily last week that the President will commission the N4, 666,481,591.90 River port which is expected to serve as a port of departure and embarkation of passengers and goods using the River Niger.
The contract include the rehabilitation of the Onitsha River Port Complex, supply and installation of cargo handling equipment including the construction of gang way, transit shed, rehabilitation of warehouse, launching berth, outdoor storage areas, construction of administrative block, staff quarters and independent water supply facility was awarded and nearing completion.
The contract was awarded to an indigenous construction company, Inter-Bau.
Our correspondent confirmed that apart from the port structures, there is also nine senior staff quarters, 11 junior staff quarters, in addition to a complete rehabilitation of the port security and police post buildings
There is also a rehabilitation of the transit shed for passengers, warehouse, fire brigade building, electrified all of them and rehabilitated the drainage system.
I n addition there is now a new port operation building, a rehabilitated gang way, cargo handling equipment which include one unit of  50 tons roll trailer, two units of  48 and 32 tons forklifts and a 50 tons reach stacker.
Shipping Position Daily however confirmed that the port will be concessioned after the President may have commissioned it.
It was learnt that the Infrastructural Concession Regulation Commission (ICRC) has already appointed a consultant that will oversee both the bidding and concessioning process.
