The Managing Director of Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) Mallam Habib Abdulahi has reiterated the determination of the Authority to make some of the nation’s sea ports the hub of maritime activities not only in the sub-region, but for the entire African continent.
With the tremendous potentials of some of the nation’s seaports, improved infrastructural development in the nation’s port sector and the huge market, the Managing Director reasoned that the nation’s seaports can conveniently serve as hub for the continent.

Mallam Habib was speaking to a journalist, who sought his opinion on a recent publication in a newspaper which wrote that: “Lagos, Cape Town ranked as most innovative cities”.

The story was credited to two international bodies, Citigroup and Urban Land Institute of the United States of America.
In the publication, the newspaper reported that, “in terms of economic potential, Lagos Port was ranked for accounting for 80% of Nigeria’s seaport activities”.

And in response, Mallam Habib affirmed that he was not surprised by such positive comment of the publication as the Management is consistently making efforts to ensure the effectiveness and efficiency of the nation’s seaports.
He explained that not only are the channels of the seaports navigable with regular maintenance dredging, all wrecks along the channels have all been removed to facilitate smooth navigation in and out of the channels.
He cited a number of project embarked upon or completed by the Management to enhance improved port operations generally in the nation’s seaports. One of such projects he pointed out is the rehabilitation of the 1.6km common user access road in Lagos Port Complex (LPC).
In the same vein, Mallam Habib said the Management is working relentlessly on the development of the two deep seaports in the country, situated in Lekki and Badagry, both in Lagos State, while Ibaka deep sea port project in Akwa Ibom State is in active attention of the Federal government.
