The Chairman, Institute of Chartered Ship Brokers (ICS), Dr Chris Ebare has tasked the President-Elect; Bola Ahmed Tinubu to ensure that the maritime sector is repositioned. This is even as the group urged Tinubu to appoint core professionals at the helm of affairs in the maritime industry.
Speaking exclusively to Shipping Position Daily in Lagos on Wednesday, the ICS Chairman noted that Nigeria is blessed with its coastal position, which can create better revenue than the oil sector if the maritime sector is well repositioned.
Dr Ebare who is also a maritime lawyer added that other core maritime countries like Singapore, Greece, Cyprus, Norway, Antwerp and some Asian countries do not have oil, but depend on the maritime industry. He noted that these maritime countries generate billions and trillions of Dollars every year.
The ICS Chairman however called on the President-Elect to ensure that core professionals are appointed to take charge at the Ministerial level and as heads of government regulatory agencies. According to him, this will reposition the maritime industry and revenue meant for the government would not be diverted to private pockets.
“We, the experts in the maritime sector want to congratulate and encourage our in-coming government which is going to be led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. As a professional and technocrat that he is, he should please ensure that the maritime sector is repositioned. He should ensure that core professionals are in the helm of affairs, from Ministerial levels to the ports. By doing so, you will see that at the end of the day the maritime sector in this country is well positioned.
“The income in the Maritime sector will be quite better than that of the oil sector. We have seen it working in other countries like Singapore, Greece, Cyprus, Norway, Antwerp and others don’t have oil. These are core maritime countries. Some Asian countries don’t have oil too. What they depend on is the shipping and maritime industry. They know how to generate revenue. It is a money spinning sector. These countries generate billions and trillions of Dollars every year and that is what is sustaining them.
“If this is done, revenue meant for the government would not be diverted to private pockets. God has blessed us with the Coastal position that we can recreate all around the country and at the end, we would see a lot of revenue coming up” Ebare concluded.
