The maritime training institute which is a subsidiary of Emdee group of school situated in Lagos says it is set to contribute to manpower development in Nigeria.
Rector of the school, Mr David Adekunle told Shipping Position Daily in his office last week that the institute observed the dominance of foreigners in the sector which in turn gave rise to the need for capacity building in Nigerians.

Rector of the school, Mr David Adekunle told Shipping Position Daily in his office last week that the institute observed the dominance of foreigners in the sector which in turn gave rise to the need for capacity building in Nigerians.
Adekunle stressed that the first batch of students will be engaged with classroom studies before the practical aspect will follow in order for the intakes to understand the process of maritime training.
…..The rector said that plans are ongoing with shipping companies on the need for the students to be engaged with practical knowledge.
He also stressed that the maritime institute has been approved by the National Board for Technical Education [NBTE] and the Ministry of Education and at least a total of two students will be admitted through the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board [JAMB].
He said that ‘’when the student are coming in we will make them to face the theoretical aspect, at a stage when they will need practical experience ,we have shipping companies that will sign Memorandum of Standing [MOU] with to ensure that the students gets 100% practical knowledge’’.
The one time customs chief affirmed that ‘’JAMB has conducted there examination ,we will have intakes from them and for the first time ,they want to give us 200 students for the youths who want to pick a career in shipping and maritime related courses’’, he said.
The fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Shipping [NIS], also added that the certificate obtained by student after a period of two years is National Innovative Diploma {NID] which is recognized by the federal government of Nigeria and it is also an equivalent of the National Diploma obtained from polytechnics.
According to him, there is the shortage of manpower in the Nigerian maritime sector and there is the need for more private and public maritime institutes to spring up in order to serve the yearnings of the Nigerian public.
‘’As at now the number of maritime schools in the country are not even enough when compared to the population of the country. We need more maritime schools to spring up ‘’,he stressed .
He also added that there will an executive programmes at managerial level in any shipping and marine related organizations with a view to train and empower stakeholders in the maritime industry and the classes will be slated to hold on weekend basis.
Also speaking about the chartered institutes of Shipping Nigeria [CISN] bill pending before the national assembly, the rector of the college urged the sponsors of the bill, which are the Nigerian Institute of Shipping [NIS] and the Certified Institute of Shipping [CIS] to put more effort on the passage of the bill into law.
He said that the charter committee should be charged and encourage thus to put more effort on the pending bill before the floor of the house.
