One of the leading aspirants for the position of President General of the Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN) in the forthcoming March 28 elections, Comrade Ifeanyi Mazeli, has withdrawn from the race, citing the need to maintain peace in the maritime industry.
Comrade Mazeli, who is the President of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) branch of MWUN, announced his decision after consultations with the immediate past President General of the union, Comrade Tony Nted.
Mazeli explained that his decision to step down was driven by his desire to foster harmony within the union. “For the sake of peace in the industry, I have decided to step aside. After consulting with our respected leader, Comrade Tony Nted, I believe this is the best course of action,” he said.
Mazeli further revealed that he had withdrawn in support of another aspirant, Comrade Francis Bunu, who has emerged as a strong contender for the position. However, when asked if any promises or assurances influenced his withdrawal, he categorically denied such claims, stating that his decision was solely in the interest of peace and unity within the union.
It should be recalled that on January 17, the Dockworkers, Seafarers, and NPA branches of MWUN publicly declared their support for Comrade Francis Bunu. The leaders of these branches described Bunu as the most suitable candidate, citing his track record as a champion of workers’ welfare.
At a meeting held in Lagos, the leaders, including Comrade Tajudeen Ibrahim Ohize, President of the Dockworkers branch; Comrade Sunday Avoseh, President of the Seamen branch; and Deputy President General Tony Harry, expressed their unwavering confidence in Bunu’s leadership qualities.
Speaking on behalf of their respective branches, they highlighted Bunu’s passion for the welfare of union members, his humility, and his ability to achieve positive outcomes during negotiations. According to them, his commitment to the well-being of workers makes him the ideal candidate to lead MWUN into its next phase.
As the election draws closer, the spotlight remains on Bunu, who appears to have garnered significant support within the union. Many observers believe that the withdrawal of Mazeli, a prominent figure in the union, further strengthens Bunu’s chances of emerging victorious in the upcoming elections.
