With the race for the next President-General of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) heating up, the union’s current Treasurer, Comrade Uche Igwe Onu, has formally thrown his hat in the ring, setting the stage for what could be one of the most competitive elections in the union’s history.
Speaking at the flag-off event in Lagos on Thursday, Igwe Onu declared his ambition, calling on union members; particularly those from the Shipping Branch, to rally behind his bid.
Addressing a crowd of supporters, Igwe Onu, a former President of the MWUN Shipping Branch, emphasized his long-standing commitment to the union, asserting that his track record speaks for itself.
“Let me start by saying I have paid my dues in this system. My pedigree is clear, and my colleagues can testify. I have the capacity, integrity, and discipline to manage this union,” he stated.
He also acknowledged the critical challenges facing the maritime labour force, particularly the outsourcing of dockworkers and seafarers, pledging to confront these issues head-on if elected.
In what appeared to be a veiled critique of traditional campaign methods, Igwe Onu stressed that winning an election goes beyond printing posters and distributing flyers.
“Election campaigns are not just about posters and pamphlets; it’s about engaging the right people at the right time. It’s about building trust and securing commitment,” he declared.
His message resonated strongly with union members present, who took turns to endorse his candidacy, describing him as a leader with the experience and vision to take MWUN to greater heights.
Speaking earlier, Deputy President-General of MWUN, Comrade Boniface Udom, described Igwe Onu as “tested and trusted,” calling on members to support his bid.
Similarly, MWUN Vice President, Comrade Funmi Fasan, encouraged members to actively promote Igwe Onu’s candidacy beyond the Shipping Branch, emphasizing that his leadership would benefit the entire union.
“Uche Igwe Onu is not just a candidate for the Shipping Branch; he is a candidate for MWUN as a whole. Let’s ensure his vision and mission become a reality,” she urged.
Also speaking, Shipping Branch President, Comrade Ekpeyong Ekpeyong, described the campaign flag-off as a crucial rallying point, declaring full support for Igwe Onu’s presidency .
“We have gathered here to propose and promote our leader. He is our leader, and we are loyal to him. The time has come for us to take the number one spot in the union,” Ekpeyong said, adding that consultations with other branches were ongoing.
The MWUN Women’s Wing Leader, Comrade Rosemary Otikpere, also mobilized female members of the Shipping Branch, urging them to intensify grassroots efforts to secure widespread support for Igwe Onu.
