The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) has announced that the Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) gas pipeline project is now 72 percent complete.

Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Ltd, Mr. Bayo Ojulari, made the disclosure on Thursday at the 2025 edition of the Oloibiri Lecture Series and Energy Forum (OLEF) held in Abuja. He was represented by the Executive Vice President, Upstream, Mr. Udobong Ntia.

Ojulari reiterated the company’s commitment to Nigeria’s energy transition, highlighting the role of technology and local content development in achieving national energy goals.

“In alignment with Nigeria’s energy transition plan, which seeks to achieve net-zero emissions by 2060, NNPC Limited has initiated several gas-led transition programs,” he said. “These include the expansion of our Autogas program targeting over one million vehicles by 2026, and the completion of critical backbone infrastructure like the AKK pipeline, which is about 72 percent complete. We are targeting the first quarter of 2026 for full delivery.”

He emphasized that ensuring energy security for Nigeria’s over 200 million citizens remains a top priority for the company. He also noted NNPC’s growing investments in power generation, citing projects such as the 1-gigawatt BiIPP-JV (phases one and two), 650 megawatts from the FarmJV, and a 50-megawatt emergency power plant in Maiduguri.

“Energy security is non-negotiable,” Ojulari stated. “NNPC is playing a critical role in enhancing the power sector and continues to invest in infrastructure that strengthens our national energy grid.”

Ojulari also commended the implementation of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA), describing it as a turning point that transformed NNPC into a commercially-driven entity with global competitiveness. He highlighted local content as a key strategic focus, revealing that the Nigerian Oil and Gas Industry Content Development (NOGIC) Act has facilitated over $10 billion in local value addition since 2020. A significant portion of NNPC’s project components are now being sourced locally, he added.

Earlier, the Chairman of the Society for Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Nigeria Council, Engr. Amina Danmadami, underscored the importance of the OLEF since its inception in 1991.

“This year’s theme, ‘Driving Energy Sustainability Through Technology, Policy, and Supply Chain Excellence,’ reflects our current reality,” she said. “While the world shifts to renewables, oil and gas remain vital to Nigeria’s economic stability and energy security. Our focus should be on optimizing the sector, not replacing it.”

Danmadami also stressed the need for effective policy implementation and greater investments in supply chain resilience to drive sustainability.

In his remarks, the Executive Secretary of the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF), Alhaji Ahmad Aminu, reaffirmed the Fund’s commitment to supporting innovation and capacity building across Nigeria’s energy sector.
