The management of Lekki Port LFTZ Enterprise Limited (LPLEL), promoters of Lekki Deep Sea Port, has expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the recent inauguration of the port’s access road located within the Lagos Free Zone at Itoke Village, Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos.
The 37-kilometre Lekki Deep Sea Port Access Road, which connects the Dangote Refinery and Fertilisers Plant to Eleko Junction, was officially commissioned by President Tinubu on Thursday, June 5, 2025.
Speaking after the inauguration ceremony, Managing Director of Lekki Port, Wang Qiang, who attended the event as a special guest, emphasized that the new access road will significantly enhance the port’s operational efficiency. According to him, the improved access will enable seamless cargo evacuation from the port, which in turn is expected to drive trade activities and stimulate economic growth.
“The issue of access road to the Lekki Deep Sea Port has been a source of concern for the port to deliver on its mandate as the gateway to Nigeria and as the game changer in the maritime sector, but with the inauguration of the road today, many maritime stakeholders now have more confidence to import and export goods through Lekki Port,” Wang said.
The Lekki Port chief further described the road’s inauguration as both historic and symbolic, noting that President Tinubu originally conceived the idea of the Lekki Free Trade Zone during his tenure as Governor of Lagos State between 1999 and 2007.
He also highlighted that with the completion of the access road, alongside the recent federal approval for the construction of the 7th Axial Road and the ongoing Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road project, Lekki Deep Sea Port is now strategically positioned to serve as a key maritime hub in Nigeria.
While outlining the competitive advantages of the port, Wang stated that Lekki Deep Sea Port remains the largest and deepest seaport in Nigeria with a draft depth of 16.5 metres, enabling it to accommodate 18,000 TEU vessels for transshipment purposes. He added that Lekki Port is also the most modern and fully automated port in Nigeria, equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and offering the fastest estimated cargo clearing time of between five to seven days from vessel arrival.
Wang reaffirmed Lekki Port’s commitment to working collaboratively with government agencies and stakeholders to further develop the maritime sector and position Nigeria as West Africa’s leading maritime hub.
