The immediate past President-General of Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN); Comrade Adewale Adeyanju has commended his successor; Comrade Francis Bunu for his handling of the electoral process in the union.
Adeyanju who is the current Deputy President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and also the Vice Chairman (Global) of the International Transport Workers Federation (ITF), noted that the success of the election validated Bunu’s capability and justified his succession to the union’s top position.
“I have no regrets and no doubts about the choice of Comrade Bunu to lead the union. He has proven himself capable by the way he managed the Shipping Branch elections,” Adeyanju stated.
The union, on Monday elected Comrade Femi Abass as the new President of its Shipping Branch. Abass, who previously served as the Vice President of the branch, emerged winner at the election which held at the union’s Secretariat in Lagos.
He succeeds Comrade Ekpeyong Ekpeyong, who completed two terms of eight years at the helm of the branch.
Despite earlier concerns about possible crisis leading up to the elections, the process was conducted peacefully under the supervision of the union’s President-General, Comrade Francis Bunu Abi.
The former President General of the MWUN also expressed appreciation to stakeholders in the maritime sector for their continued support for the union’s leadership and urged union members to show patience and cooperation as the new executives settle into their roles.
Addressing the newly-elected Shipping Branch executives, Adeyanju urged them to embrace unity, tolerance, and teamwork in order to advance the branch’s objectives. He emphasized the importance of loyalty and trust in achieving long-term success.
He described Abass as disciplined, committed, and loyal, stating that his leadership qualities would serve the union well. Adeyanju expressed confidence that the new branch president would live up to expectations.
The election results mark a new chapter for the MWUN Shipping Branch, with Abass and his team expected to serve a four-year term.
