KNOW YOUR BODY PARTS: Ear, Nose And Throat

“Ear, Nose, and Throat” refers to the anatomical regions and their associated medical specialty, which is also known as otolaryngology (ENT). ENT specialists diagnose and treat a wide array of conditions affecting the ears, nose, throat, and the head and neck area, covering problems like ear infections, hearing loss, sinusitis, allergies, throat pain, and voice disorders. The ears are essential for hearing and balance, the nose filters, warms, and humidifies air for breathing and is crucial for smell, and the throat serves as a passageway for air and food.

·         Functions of the Ear, Nose, and Throat

Ear: Responsible for hearing by collecting sound waves and transmitting them to the brain. The inner ear’s vestibular system also helps maintain balance.

Nose: Filters, warms, and moistens inhaled air. It is also the primary organ of smell and contributes to taste.

Throat: A muscular tube that channels air to the lungs and food and liquids to the esophagus. It contains the voice box (larynx), which houses the vocal cords for speech.

·         Common Conditions and Treatments

An ENT specialist (otolaryngologist) can address issues such as:

Ear Problems: Earaches, hearing loss, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), ear infections, and dizziness.

Nose Problems: Sinus congestion, allergies, nosebleeds, and sinus infections (sinusitis).

Throat Problems: Sore throats, tonsillitis, difficulty swallowing, and voice disorders.

Neck Problems: Lumps in the neck and issues with the thyroid gland.

Sleep Problems: Conditions like sleep apnea.

 

·         When to See an ENT Specialist?

A general practitioner may recommend an ENT consultation if you experience symptoms like chronic ear infections, unexplained hearing loss, frequent nosebleeds, or difficulty swallowing.

·         What are the symptoms of an ear, nose and throat infection?

 

Symptoms include headaches, fevers, bad breath, nasal congestion, sore throat, fatigue in the morning, dizziness in the morning when standing up too fast.

 

·         How to unblock ear, nose and throat?

Drink plenty of water.

Sip ice cold water when you need to clear your throat, rather than coughing or swallowing.

Try using a humidifier to help loosen the mucus in your nose and throat.

Try using an extra pillow in bed so you sleep in a more upright position, rather than lying flat.

Try gargling with salt water.

 

·         Is ginger good for ear infections?

Ginger. With its anti-inflammatory properties, ginger is a natural remedy that may help reduce swelling. “Some people find relief from ear pain by applying a few drops of ginger juice around their outer ear,” Dr. Nguyen-Huynh notes. “Be careful, though, not to allow it to go into the actual ear canal.”

 

·         Is turmeric good for a sore throat?

 

Turmeric can help soothe a sore throat due to its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, which come from its active compound, curcumin. You can consume it by drinking turmeric milk (golden milk) or turmeric tea, or by gargling with a warm water and salt mixture containing turmeric. To enhance its effects, you can add honey, lemon, and ginger to your drinks, and for gargling, incorporate black pepper and salt
