The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has urged officers serving in border communities to prioritise safety while discharging their duties amid prevailing security challenges.
The Assistant Comptroller-General (ACG), Zone B, Mrs Nsikon Patrick-Umoh, gave the advice during an operational visit to the Kebbi Area Command in Birnin Kebbi on Wednesday.
Patrick-Umoh said the visit was to assess the command’s activities, inspect border formations, evaluate operations, and provide necessary support to commands under his jurisdiction.
She stated that visiting the border areas allowed him to observe operations firsthand and assess challenges like insecurity, difficult terrain, and other life-threatening situations.
The ACG advised officers to always put their safety first by taking necessary precautions and adhering strictly to standard operating procedures while carrying out their duties.
“It is important for officers to remain safe and alive because their wellbeing is critical to the success of the service,” Patrick-Umoh said.
She commended the Customs Area Controller in Kebbi for his performance, describing the operational activities of the command as highly commendable.
She also stressed the need for transparency, accountability, and professionalism, noting that adherence to established guidelines remained essential to achieving the service’s mandate.
“We are building a reputation anchored on transparency. Any officer found wanting in the discharge of his duties will be appropriately sanctioned,” she said.
The ACG added that all officers must protect themselves and conduct duties in line with standard operating procedures and international best practices.
She reaffirmed the commitment of the NCS leadership to supporting officers working in difficult and high-risk border environments across the zone.
