AfCFTA Unlocks Investment Goldmine for Fintech, Infrastructure

The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) is fast reshaping the continent’s economic architecture, presenting transformative investment opportunities in fintech and infrastructure.

This was the central message delivered at the Afro-Caribbean Investment Summit, by Mr. Olusegun Olutayo, a senior international trade policy expert, who represented Mr. Olusegun Awolowo, Nigeria’s National Coordinator for AfCFTA.

Speaking at the summit, Olutayo underscored the urgency and scale of potential investment in Africa, driven by the operationalization of AfCFTA. Describing the agreement as an “economic transformation blueprint,” he said it represents the single largest free trade area in the world by number of participating countries, and holds the key to reversing Africa’s persistently low intra-continental trade, which has lingered below 20% for over six decades.

He noted that the agreement is already beginning to yield significant momentum with Nigeria playing a leading role.

Olutayo outlined three immediate fintech investment opportunities as: cross-border digital payments, SME financing, and cybersecurity. He explained that the AfCFTA Digital Trade Protocol adopted in February 2023 creates a favourable environment for digital financial services, especially as over 600 million Africans remain unbanked.

According to him, fintechs now have an opening to scale mobile banking, blockchain-based platforms, and decentralized finance systems, while developing interoperable digital payment solutions. Applauding initiatives such as the Pan-African Payment and Settlement System (PAPSS), Olutayo described it as a critical milestone for seamless intra-African trade.

He further noted that digital lending platforms, venture capital support, and AI-driven credit scoring models could provide lifelines to small businesses, particularly women-led enterprises that form the backbone of Africa’s informal sector.

Additionally, he called attention to the rising need for investment in cybersecurity and digital identity verification systems, pointing to blockchain-based identity, biometric solutions, and AI-powered security tools as urgent areas of focus as digital trade expands across borders.

Beyond fintech, the infrastructure gap across Africa was presented as the most pressing investment opportunity under the AfCFTA. Olutayo noted that efficient logistics and transport networks are essential to actualize the goals of the trade agreement.

Olutayo applauded Nigeria’s bold economic reforms under the Tinubu administration, including the unification of exchange rates, subsidy removal, and deepening of trade facilitation mechanisms, all of which he said are improving the ease of doing business and making the country more attractive to global investors.

He offered concrete proposals to ensure tangible outcomes from the summit. First, he recommended the creation of an Afri-Caribbean Investment Task Force to facilitate joint ventures, technology transfer, and regulatory harmonisation. Secondly, he proposed an investment pipeline and financing hub to prioritise and fund high-impact projects in logistics and digital trade, leveraging the AfCFTA framework.

Closing his remarks with optimism, Olutayo emphasized that AfCFTA is more than a trade agreement—it is the legal and institutional framework needed to propel Africa into a new era of shared prosperity. “Are we there yet? No. Are we making progress? Yes. All Africa needs for Africa is in Africa,” he said, calling on African and Caribbean partners to seize the moment and chart a new path for regional development through bold investments and strategic collaborations.
