All is set for the 9th edition of the African Shippers’ Day which is being hosted by the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC).

Shippers’ Councils from across the continent are expected to converge in Lagos as from Monday January 16 to Wednesday 18, 2023 under the auspices of Union of African Shippers’ Council (UASC).

The event is scheduled to hold at Lagos Oriental Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos. It will be attended by member countries of UASC as well as other countries maintaining associate status with the union, shippers and maritime stakeholders.

Ghana hosted the 8th edition of African Shippers’ Day in 2021.

According to Head, Public Relations Unit, Nigerian Shippers’ Council; Mrs Rakiya Dhikru-Yagboyaju, the programme, with the theme: ‘‘African Continental Free Trade Agreement: A Veritable Platform for African Shippers to Mainstream into Global Trade’’, will be declared open by President Muhammadu Buhari while the Minister of Transportation, Mu’Azu Sambo, is the Chief host.

In a statement, she disclosed that the Secretary General, African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA), Wamkele Mene would speak on the topic ‘‘AfCFTA: Vehicle for Africa’s Economic Growth & Development’’.

Other speakers include the Secretary General, International Chamber of Commerce Nigeria (ICCN), Olubunmi Osuntuyi who will speak on: ‘‘The Role of INCOTERMS 2020 in the Implementation of African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA)’’, and Mr. Nwachukwu Remigus, Manager, Trade Finance, African Export-Import Bank who will speak on ‘‘Payment Systems in International Trade’’.

According to the NSC spokesperson, the African Shippers’ Day is primarily aimed at creating a forum for the exchange of ideas and experiences amongst shippers’ organisations in the West and Central African sub-regions, discussions on issues that will improve maritime trade, and disseminating information on the role of shippers’ councils and UASC.
