The Jos Inland Container Depot has finally being demolished on the orders of the Plateau State Government, confirming Shipping Position Daily story of last Monday. The ICD is owned by Duncan Group of Companies.
The ICD is located in Heipang in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of the state.
Lamenting the ordeal of the firm, the Group General Manager, Duncan Group of Companies, Dr. Godfrey Shitgurum, told newsmen on Monday in Jos, that the demolision was carried out despite the Federal High Court Jos injunction restraining Governor Jonah Jang and the Jos Metropolitan Development Board (JMDB).
According to him, the injunction was served and received by JMDB and the Plateau State Ministry of Justice on Monday last week, by one Christiana Bot of JMDB and Huwa Samuel of the State ministry of Justice.
At the press briefing, Shitgurum expressed regret that the state government, which had supported the project, turned round to reject it.
He said, “It has become imperative for us at Duncan Maritime Ventures Limited to state our position, following the destruction of our facilities at the Jos Inland Container Depot, Heipang, by the Plateau State Government through its agency, the Jos Metropolitan Development Board with the view to putting the record straight and disabuse certain misconceptions.”
He pointed out that since the inception of the Jos ICD project, transactions had been between his company and the Federal Government through the Nigerian Shippers’ Council.
According to him, the firm had not had any direct contact with the Plateau State Government, he added that the company was surprised that without any information from either the Ministry of Transport or the Nigerian Shippers Council, the JMDB moved into their site at the ICD Heipang.
He noted that, the Federal Government set up ICDs to bring the facilities closer the majority of Nigerians in the hinterland as well as reduce the cost of clearing goods, lower the prices of commodities, reduce unemployment rate, facilitate additional development in the benefiting states among others.
Shipping Position Daily had reported exclusively on Monday, July 21 that the Jos ICD has been marked for demolition and that the state government had ordered its security outfit, code named:Operation Rainbow to demolish all buildings at the site.
The Jos ICD is one of the six that were licensed by the Nigerian Shippers’Council. Others are: Isiala Ngwa ICD in Abia State, Ibadan ICD, Kano ICD. There are two container freight stations too.
