The recent importation of a container laden with arms and ammunition may cause heads to roll at the Tin Can Island port in Lagos. The container was intercepted on Saturday November 21, 2010 at the port’s exit gate after it had earlier been inspected and cleared by customs officers.
However the Comptroller General of Customs, Alhaji Dikko Abdulahi is raising eyebrows over what sources close to Customs headquarters call lack of due diligence in the processes that led to the interception.
Consequently, the Customs boss is reported to have given the Tin Can port Customs Area Controller Mr Austen Warikoru a matching order to produce all the officers who examined the container that had the arms and ammunitions.
Our correspondent learnt that Dikko was disturbed that customs officers actually compromised while subjected the container to 100 per cent examination.
The possibility that some officers either out rightly jettisoned the examination or decided to give a false report of what they actually found in the container during examination in return for money was reinforced by the area controller when he confirmed last week that the container indeed escaped all the scrutiny in the port, only to be un covered at the exit gate.
Found in the container were: arms and about 1,431 rounds of ammunitions.
Our source disclosed that Warikoru was accused of always shielding erring officers in his command from punishment.
