A freight forwarder and a member of the National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarder (NAGAFF) Mr. Nnadi Ugochukwu, has fingered the nation’s automobile policy of 2013 as the major cause of inflation in Nigeria.
Mr. Ugochukwu, who disclosed this in a chat with Shipping Position Daily in Lagos last week, also called on the Federal Government to as a matter of urgency scrap the policy, adding that it is only destroying the economy of the nation.
He maintained that the policy is only a fraud being supported by some set of individuals because of their selfish interests.
“The Auto policy of 2013 was a fraud, everybody was against it, it is only the people that are benefiting from it that are supporting it. The policy is taking Nigeria backwards it is not a good policy. Over 80% vehicles destined for this country ends up in Cotonuo and Nigerians will go there to smuggle it. The duty here is very high because of the auto policy. So to me, I think this auto policy should be scrapped. From 2013 till now is five years and we have not gained from it; we only gained inflation. The small car I bought for my wife as at 2013 was at the rate of N350, 000 and the duty on that vehicle then was N80, 000. But now the duty you can pay on that same vehicle is N210, 000 and to buy that same vehicle now you will pay at least from N800, 000 upwards. This is inflation and it is all because of the auto policy it will take us nowhere it will only destroy our economy” he concluded.
