Seaport Terminal Operators Association of Nigeria (STOAN) has blamed the chaotic nature of ports’ access’ vehicular traffic control, saying that it is the major cause of reduction in the turnaround time of trucks.
The Secretary General of the association, Barrister Boye Uzamot, who said this recently in Calabar, also said that the situation has resulted in the high cost of haulage and congestion at the terminals, even as he called for a multimodal transport system in the sector to ease the movement of cargoes from one point to the other.
“Ports access vehicular traffic control system is chaotic, it has reduced the turnaround time of trucks resulting in high cost of haulage and congestion of the terminals. Dependency on only one mode of transport for movement of cargo from the port terminal is a big challenge”, he noted.
He also said fingered inadequate public power generating system, lack of public power and water supply as posing additional cost to the terminals.
“Inadequate public power generating system, lack of public power and water supply is additional cost to the terminals. Government should consider putting independent power plant production in place”
According to him, the dilapidated port access roads have made it almost impossible to bring in or take vehicles out of the ports.
“The access roads to the port have since collapsed; it has brought attendant negative consequences on our operations. It has been difficult to bring in or take out vehicles from the ports”, he lamented.
