Mr Bishir Balogun has assumed duty as the Controller, Nigeria Customs Service, Federal Operations Unit Zone ‘C,’ Owerri, following the retirement of Comptroller Michael Ugbagu.
Speaking at the handover ceremony on Friday in Owerri, Balogun congratulated his predecessor for his outstanding performance during his tenure.
He applauded Ugbagu’s significant role in curbing and bringing smuggling activities to a minimal level within his sphere of jurisdiction.
Balogun expressed resolve to ensure that the core mandates of the Nigeria Customs Service including anti-smuggling, trade facilitation, blockage of revenue leakages and national security were achieved.
He charged officers of the unit to carry out their duties professionally, and to display high level of discipline and commitment at all times.
Balogun promised to operate an open-door policy in ensuring a seamless operation within and around the unit’s jurisdiction.
The new Customs boss sought the support and cooperation of the officers of the unit, stakeholders, and sister security agencies to achieve the objectives of the Federal Government.
He pledged to build on the policy thrust of the Comptroller-General of Nigeria Customs, Bashir Adeniyi, in effectively combating economic saboteurs.
Balogun, who was shown round the FOU Zone C facility, stressed the importance of team work in the fight against smuggling, illicit trade, and economic sabotage.
In his remarks, retired Comptroller Ugbagu, who assumed duty on April 19, 2024, as controller of FOU Zone ‘C’ Owerri, thanked God for seeing him through until his retirement.
He also appreciated officers and men of the unit and heads of sister security agencies for their cooperation and support during his tenure.
Ugbagu urged officers and men of the unit to extend the same support to Balogun to enable him succeed in his national assignment.
