Movement of laden containers from Tin Can Island Port to bonded terminal has improved tremendously as terminals operating at Kirikiri phase 1 and 2 in Apapa have resulted into movement of cargoes by the use of barges.
Confirming this exclusively to Shipping Position Daily in Lagos on Tuesday, Terminal Operations Manager of Bollore Transport Logistics, also known as SDV Terminal, Mr. Ahana Williams said that the terminal during the last Sallah holidays moved over 900 containers.
He lamented that in the past four months, the percentage of laden containers that come from Tin Can Port to the SDV bonded terminal at Kirikiri has dropped from 100% to 60%, because of bad access roads.
Ahana said that as a result of the lull in business, bonded terminal operators have expressed interest to apply palliative measures on the dilapidated Tin Can Island Port axis of Apapa Oshodi-Apapa expressway, but lamented that bureaucracy at Nigerian Ports Authority is lingering the process.
Ahana noted that bonded terminal operators have rallied round and held series of meetings with major stakeholders including the Customs Area Controller of Tin Can Island Port and KLT Command and they are all aware of the intention to fix the road.
He noted that bonded terminal operators resulted to cargo movement by barges from Tin Can Island Port to Kirikiri because the roads have failed.
He said: "When the roads failed us, we quickly thought about the next option which is movement of containers by barges, we have sat with NPA and customs in Tin Can and Apapa port because we receive cargoes from both ports. Currently, i can assure you that movement of containers by barges is ongoing"
"During this last public holiday, we did some of our transfers through barges and even before the holidays we have started transfer by barges"
