The Centre for Marine Surveyors in Nigeria (CMSN) has embarked on a strategic initiative aimed at improving operational standards and strengthening regulatory frameworks within the country’s marine and cargo survey sub-sector.

Established as a professional body to sanitize the marine surveying profession and promote self-regulation, the Centre seeks to address critical gaps in the Nigerian maritime industry by ensuring that surveying services are delivered by competent and licensed professionals who meet both national and international standards.

In a statement signed by its President, Engr. Akin Olaniyan, the CMSN noted that its primary objective is to promote professionalism and technical excellence in marine surveying through a combination of education, training, and industry collaboration.

“In partnership with the Niger Delta University, we offer a Post Graduate Diploma in Marine Surveying, designed to equip professionals with both practical and academic foundations required for success in the industry,” Olaniyan stated.

Beyond academic training, the Centre is also actively involved in advocacy, strategic partnerships, and membership development. According to Olaniyan, the organisation has collaborated with key institutions such as the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB), which has sponsored several training programmes under the CMSN platform aimed at building indigenous capacity in marine surveying.

“We have also established clubs in institutions like the University of Lagos and the Federal College of Fisheries and Marine Technology,” he added.

Olaniyan further explained that as the Centre continues to expand its reach, its focus remains on strengthening industry standards, increasing student enrolment, and building partnerships that will provide graduates with access to practical experience and job opportunities.

“Our Post Graduate Diploma in Marine Surveying is a comprehensive programme designed to equip maritime professionals with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills,” he said.

While acknowledging some of the challenges facing the Centre, including limited public awareness and the need to strengthen industry partnerships, Olaniyan expressed confidence that these obstacles would be surmounted through ongoing reforms and strategic initiatives.

“We are confident that these issues will be effectively resolved in the near future,” he concluded.
