More than one year after the ban on vehicle importation through land borders by the federal government, an automobile dealer, Mr. Nnamdi Nwabu, has said that the closure did not only affect the importers ,but it is also affecting the government.
Speaking during a chat Shipping Position Daily, he said that before the closure of the land borders the place used to be a beehive of activities with so many people making their living at the various borders, unlike now when the place is a shadow of itself.
He said: “People are complaining on the ban on the land importation while others are still making waves. You know when one door closes another opens. We are in the situation of survival of the fittest; the ban on doesn’t only affect the automobile dealers but other persons that are engaged in the process even customs themselves. It affects clearing agents, automobile dealers, and customs so it is everybody. If you have gone to the borders before the closure you will see how busy the place used to be it is full of life and activities, but now everything has stopped.
Before now many people were engaged there and were making their living so it doesn’t only affect automobile dealers”.
Speaking further on the sale of vehicles so far this year, he maintained that it is too early to know how the year will look like even though he said that he didn’t see any good policy for the automobile industry coming from the government.
“The year just begun, so it is still early to predict how the year will be, we still have a lot of days to go in this year and we are yet to see the direction of the government this year. On a normal platform, I don’t see much change from the government this year judging by their body movement. We are in a government that does not care about the welfare of the people, a government that is so blind to the needs and challenges of its citizens. I don’t see them capable of doing anything that will help the automobile industry this year”, he lamented.
