The Senate Committee on Privatisation, led by Senator Sunday Katung, has expressed the committee’s readiness to facilitate a faster renewal of Ports and Cargo’s

concession agreement.

Katung gave the assurance in a statement through the Corporate Communications Officer of SIFAX Group, Mr Olatunde Adewola, during the visit of the committee to Ports & Cargo Terminal on Wednesday in Lagos.

The senator said that the visit was part of its oversight function of monitoring the performances of concessioned firms,

He said the purpose of the visit was to understand the issues around port terminal operations by the concessionaires and to proffer solutions to identified challenges for the maritime sector.

Katung said that if the identified challenges were addressed that the maritime sector would contribute substantially to the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

He further promised that the committee would liaise with all relevant government agencies connected with the concession renewal for quicker resolution.

Adeola said that the meeting also highlighted broader industry challenges and opportunities, such as implementing single-window cargo clearance systems and developing inland ports to ease congestion in Lagos terminals.
