The Zone ‘C’ Federal Operations Unit of the Nigeria Customs Service in Owerri said it had commenced a manhunt for smugglers who abandoned a 20-feet container with 205 high quality bales of printed wax worth N118 million.
A statement from the command's Public Relations Officer, Mrs Ifeoma Onuigbo, and made available to Shipping Position Daily, said the contraband, abandoned along Eleme-Aba road was being investigated.
It quoted the Customs Area Controller, Mr Victor Dimka, as assuring that those behind the abandoned goods would be arrested and prosecuted.
“We are going to find out how the smugglers came about the contrabands and get them arrested and prosecuted.
“Today, no matter how rich the people are, they will be touched because their business has been dealt a big blow.”
Dimka noted that apart from the havoc caused to the nation's economy by smuggling, local manufacturers of goods were most affected, considering the lack of patronage of their goods in textile production.
He warned members of the public to resist the temptation of getting involved in smuggling as custom officers were more equipped to get information about their activities more than before.
The statement also said that the command had made seven seizures worth N140.9 million in June
The seizures include 151 bales of second hand clothing; 340 pieces of used foot wears; 135 bags of 50 Kilogrammes of foreign rice and cartons of assorted foreign wine, all seized at different locations within the zone.
