The Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC), Adewale Adeniyi, has assured the Niger State Government of the Nigeria Customs Service’s (NCS) commitment to supporting agricultural development and strengthening border security.

The CGC made this known on Wednesday, 12 March 2025, when he received the Governor of Niger State, Umaru Bago, on a courtesy visit at the Customs Headquarters in Abuja.

Welcoming the governor, CGC Adeniyi commended his administration’s strides in agricultural transformation, noting that it aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s priority areas.

He said, “We are indeed very happy to have you amongst us. It is heartwarming to see the strides you have recorded in two years as Executive Governor of Niger State.”

“We identify with the agricultural revolution you have unleashed, and we believe this is one of the key areas where Mr. President has placed keen attention”. CGC Adeniyi said.

He added, “Just before you arrived, we were discussing the Nigeria Customs Service’s Corporate Social Responsibility, where agriculture was identified as a major pillar. I want to assure you that we recognise this mission, and the Nigeria Customs Service will collaborate with Niger State in enhancing food security.”

Speaking on Niger State’s strategic position in Customs operations, CGC Adeniyi acknowledged the vast border areas stretching from Borgu Game Reserve to Babana, linking to the Republic of Benin.

“These areas are very strategic entry points for trade, and we are committed to ensuring legitimate trade while curbing illicit activities. Our focus is to deploy more technology to enhance surveillance and intelligence gathering in these locations.” He stated.

On his part, Governor Bago, in his remarks, congratulated the CGC on his appointment and expressed the state government’s willingness to deepen collaboration with the NCS.

“We have come here for three things. First, to congratulate you on your appointment as Comptroller-General. Secondly, to seek collaboration between Niger State and the Nigeria Customs Service, considering our large border with Benin Republic,” Gov. Bago said.

He said, “Thirdly, as an agrarian state committed to Mr. President’s food security agenda, we wish to engage with Customs to ease the burden of taxation and tariffs on agricultural production.

“We also seek to be considered as off-takers for seized agricultural equipment during auctions to support our farmers”, said the governor.
