Comptroller Frank Onyeka of the Tincan Island Port Command has reiterated the importance of thorough consignment inspections before cargoes exit the port, emphasizing that diligent checks will prevent unnecessary stop-and-search operations after departure. Speaking during a parade with officers, he stressed that national security should be prioritized in all clearance processes to ensure the safety of the country and its citizens.

Acknowledging the command’s performance, Comptroller Onyeka commended officers for their contributions to revenue generation in January, urging them to maintain high standards of professionalism and efficiency. To further enhance their capacity, he announced plans for workshops aimed at equipping both officers and stakeholders with deeper knowledge of customs procedures and policies. He also cautioned officers against unprofessional conduct, stating that any reported cases of misconduct would not be tolerated.

In a separate development, the Comptroller received the newly deployed Director of State Services (DSS), Mr. S.M. Kayode, as well as the Executive Chairman of the Africa Association of Professional Freight Forwarders and Logistics of Nigeria (APFLON), Alhaji Akeem Ayobiojo who led members of his association on a familiarization visit to the command. The visits, held separately, reaffirmed the commitment of both organizations to strengthening collaboration with the Nigeria Customs Service to ensure smooth port operations and prevent the inflow of harmful products into the country.

Addressing some technical concerns raised by APFLON, Comptroller Onyeka assured that the command is repositioned to promote the three core mandates of the Comptroller-General of Customs—collaboration, consolidation, and innovation. He noted that these principles are essential in creating a safe and efficient working environment that does not pose a threat to national security. He further urged stakeholders to stay updated on the implementation of new customs policies, particularly the soon-to-be-launched B’Odogwu clearance system by the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi. The new system, he said, will enhance efficiency in customs operations, streamline clearance processes, and improve service delivery at the port.
