The Western Marine Command of the Nigeria Customs Service, yesterday intercepted 48 bales of cannabis, also known as Indian hemp, with market street value of N150,000,000.
The command also arrested a 24-year old suspect by the name Bala Mamudu who is from Hausa village in Ojo Local Government Area of Lagos; he has been handled over to officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
Addressing journalists at the command in Lagos, Customs Area Controller; Comptroller Umar Yusuf disclosed that the dangerous drugs were intercepted on Tuesday 9th of February, 2016.
The Western Marine Customs boss further disclosed that the products and the suspect were accosted at Igbo Ojanla near Badagry in Lagos.
Comptroller Yusuf who was in company with the Assistant Comptroller General of Customs, Mr. Charles Edike and the Lagos state Commander; NDLEA Alhaji Umar Yusuf while parading the suspect before journalists at the command’s jetty, in Lagos added that the seized items weigh about 4,500 kilogramme.
He also stated that the weeds were intercepted at about 12:05am while being imported into Nigeria from Ghana.
“Once again, I am glad to inform you that we the officers and men of Western Marine Command in collaboration with our capable CIU operatives who work hand in hand with the office under the leadership of the amiable CGC and his management team, have made another remarkable seizure of 48 bales of cannabis”, he stated.
Also speaking, ACG Charles Edike urged the general public to shun smuggled goods, saying that such items are dangerous to human health.
Edike recalled that the recent seizures made by the command are laudable, adding that the latest seizure of cannabis is a remarkable achievement recorded by the command since its establishment.
He added that the CGC will soon assist the command on the request of officers and other logistics needed for effective operations.
Edike noted that the command has been active in its quest to nip smuggling in the bud, stressing the need for them to be fully equip to do their jobs.
