The Nigeria Customs Services (NCS), Federal Operations Unit, Zone C, Owerri said last week that it recorded duty paid value seizures worth N1.04 billion in 2012.
The Unit Comptroller, Mr Mohammed Biu, made the fact known at the presentation of Award of Excellence to him by International Merit Organisation, Vienna, in Owerri.
Biu said that with the assistance of his lieutenants, the service was able to reduce smuggling to the barest minimum in the zone.
He said the unit had already recorded some seizures since the beginning of the year.
“Between 13th and 15th January, 2013, we made seizures of 40 and 20 footer containers respectively of the following items: 92 pieces of used tyres, 109 pieces of various sizes of new tyres, 14 bales of second hand clothes,’’ he said.
Biu said the unit also seized “387 bales of used bags, two sacks of used handbags, 15 bales of elastic band, 369 bales of printed cotton made in Holland, totalling N374 million.”
He attributed the achievements made to the foundation laid by the Comptroller General, Mr Abdullahi Dikko, and as such dedicated the award to him.
“He denied himself the comfort of his bed to make sure that our salary was increased. To me, he is the best comptroller of Customs ever in Nigeria.
“I urge all of us to put in our best to implement government policies to the letter. The comptroller general has given us all we need to perform,” Biu advised.
He stressed the need to check the importation of second hand and other materials, pointing out that they could be infectious and lead to the closure of local industries.
“The more these things come in, the more we buy them and close our industries,’’ Biu said.
The member of International Merit Organisation, Mr Tony Nzekwe, who presented the award, said the award was reward for hard work.
He said it was an annual award used to celebrate men of good conduct, diligence and elegance.
He said that he was sent from Vienna since the comptroller could not come to the city.
