The Nigerian Shippers Council has been commended by freight forwarders in the maritime sub- sector for exceptional performance in the area of capacity building of personnel and practitioners in the maritime sector.
The stakeholders who spoke with Shipping Position Daily in separate interviews in Lagos last week expressed satisfaction in the council's conduct to train, re-train and re-orientate players from the sector.
At a three day workshop organised by the council with support from Maritime Anti-Corruption Network (MACN ),the stakeholders expressed satisfaction on training programme which centred on port efficiency, ethics and the use of the newly introduced Ports Service Support Portal (PSSP)
The training was attended by members of the Save Nigeria Freight Forwarders Importers Exporters Coalition, Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA), National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders (NAGAFF), Association of Registered Freight Forwarders of Nigeria (AREFFN).
Speaking with our correspondent on the significant of the training programme for practitioners, National Coordinator, Save Nigeria Freight Forwarders Importers Exporters Coalition, Sir Patrick Osita Chukwu said that the beauty of the capacity building was meant to add value in port operations.
Osita said that the orientation programme put in place by the council was to bring about change in the maritime industry, especially in port operations.
He noted that an economic port regulator, the council has created an avenue for operators to addressing issues of corruption at the nation's seaports.
The port activist frontman reiterated that the training was aimed to fashion out ways on how the ports can be free from corruption.
"The benefit from the three day training programme is to make us understand what is ethical and what is unethical about the policies guiding port operations"
"It’s a train the trainer programme and we are looking at how best we can impact positively to our members in area of transparency "
Representative of NAGAFF and Secretary General of the association, Mr. Arthur Igwilo described the training as a well packaged programme that would transform participants for effective port operations.
He said the capacity building workshop has added value to the port profession, adding that the initiators of the programme must be commended for doing the needful to impact on the operators, who will later transfer to members.
Highpoint of the capacity programme was the award of "certificate of completion" to participants at the workshop.
The capacity building programme tagged: “Training of trainers on port efficiency, ethics and the use of the Port Service Support Portal (PSSP) was also supported by the Port Steering Committee (PSC), which includes Technical Unit of Governance and Anti-Corruption Reforms (TUGAR) and Independent Corrupt Practices and other Offences Commission (ICPC).
Others are: Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP),Nigeria Immigration Service,Port Health Service,NIMASA,NPA,NDLEA and CRFFN.
