The two house unions in the Nigeria Port Authority [NPA), have advised employees of the organisation who are due for retirement to ensure wise utilisation of their retirement benefits.
The advise came to the fore yesterday in Lagos, at the commencement of a three- day pre- retirement seminar tagged ‘’Life After Work, A Worthy Priority ‘’ for hundreds of Nigeria Port Authority [NPA], staff who are due to leave the service soon.
Presidents of the two house unions; NPA branch of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria, Comrade Adeleke Sanni and President, Senior Staff Association ,Transport and Corporation [SSACTAC]Comrade Umar Omeiza Jimoh harped on the need to retire happily and live thereafter in contentment.
In a chat with Shipping Position Daily at the seminar, President of the Nigeria Port Authority Branch of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria, Comrade Adeleke Sanni said that the workshop was organized to sensitize and educate those in service on how to manage their lives after active years in the service.
He said most of the individuals who have retired from active service were not able to manage their money properly as a result of misinformation.
According to him, some of the retirees have been wrongly informed and therefore they have nothing to show after active service, adding that it has made some to die untimely death.
‘’Let’s face it, for most of us, no matter how hard we work, we still don’t have enough money to see us through our retirement especially in the face of the ongoing economic crunch. The basic reason for the workshop is to sensitize and educate our people on how to manage their lives after retirement, because we find out that a lot of them after retirement mismanage the money they were paid because they were not well informed on how to manage their lives’’ .
‘’In the past, you find out that some of them will go and give money to unknown investment firms and in turn, they find it very difficult to reap from where they have invested and it has been a major problem even leading to death, so we find out that some of retirees on the street are living corpses, because of the way they managed the funds given to them, so that is why we have decided to enlighten our people through this workshop’’, Sanni stated.
On his part, President of the Senior Staff Association of Communications, Transport and Corporation [SSACTAC] Comrade Umar Omeiza Jimoh said that the workshop is meant to be an eye- opener to workers of the organization.
He said that the workshop is a major priority that will enable people to manage their life after retirement, adding that it is a way of preparing them for their future after service.
Comrade Umar noted that the workshop is designed to hold on quarterly basis for those who are due for retirement.
However he also said that plans are ongoing for those that will retire in the nearest future, stressing that the workshop will be in batches.
‘’We are organizing a course titled life after work, which is a major priority to us all, because when you are about to retire, the association will midwife you into the new life you are about to experience after service”, he stressed.
The programme is designed on a quarterly basis to prepare them for a better life after service. Those that are retire this year are our target , we are also planning on those that will retire from service in five years time’’, he stated.
