Rector Stars Maritime Academy; Dr. Reuben Ovai has said that Nigerian youths prefer to seek admission into Universities or Polytechnics instead of the many specialised schools that abound in the country.
Speaking with Shipping Position Daily recently in Ogun State, Ovai noted most youths are in the habit of selecting University as first choice ,Polytechnic as second, before considering specialised institutions.
Investigations also revealed that the Joint Admission Matriculations Board (JAMB) scores made some youths to settle for maritime colleges as last resort.
But responding on the development recently, Ovai stated that “some youths when applying for JAMB will first of all settle for University course, and then followed by Polytechnic, just in case the University did not work out, before thinking of any order programme ".
According to him, maritime institutions admit the least number of candidates from JAMB, because of the low level of awareness about maritime capacity.
He however noted that admission into the maritime schools is still on-going
