In a move that may drive some local vehicle importers out of business, a Toyota Tsusho subsidiary has announced that it will start selling second vehicles in Kenya.
Toyotsu Auto Mart yesterday opened a multi-operational showroom in Nairobi that will retail and service pre-owned Toyota vehicles. The outlet is an affiliated company of Toyota Kenya. It will sell Toyota, Daihatsu, Hino and Subaru brands. Professionals, with sound technical knowledge, will source for all the vehicles, it said in a statement after the launch.

One vehicle importer James Mwangi played down the launch arguing it would not be much of a threat to them since the vehicles are sourced from the same markets. "Most customers prefer an importer they know personally," he argued but said the new outlet would pose as a major threat if they will be selling the vehicle before they leave the high seas.
According to Toyotsu Auto, most of the cars will come from Toyota dealers in Japan who will give the company the first priority in selecting quality stock for the Kenyan market. Customers have the option of buying in-house stock from the wide variety available or pre-ordered units that meet specific customer requirements. The company said it will also assist to re-market fleet and individually owned Toyotas. Further, the new facility will offer additional services including unit sales, parts and after-sales, it said.
"Toyota is a car that has warmed its ways into many Kenyan's hearts due to the fact that our cars respond to identified needs. Yet, not many can afford brand new vehicles," said Toyotsu Managing Director Yoshihiro Goto. "We are therefore responding to increasing demands for pre-owned cars with an excellent service history." Toyotsu Auto Mart Kenya Ltd. was established in December 2010 as a subsidiary of Toyota Tsusho Co., Ltd in Japan which also owns Toyota Kenya Ltd.
