The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have suspended the indefinite strike, originally scheduled to commence today (October 3). This is even as the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has similarly directed all members of the union return to work in accordance with the NLC’s decision.
Recall that the NLC had threatened to go on indefinite strike in response to the removal of fuel subsidies and had urged all affiliated unions nationwide to prepare for a nationwide shutdown due to the government’s failure to address their seven-point demands, aimed at alleviating the hardships faced by Nigerian workers and the impoverished masses.
However, in a press statement issued yesterday evening by the head media of MWUN, John Ikemefuna, he informed that following to the suspension of the strike, the President General of MWUN. Comrade Adewale Adeyanju has directed all members of the union to return to work in accordance with the NLC’s decision.
The union states that the decision comes after the NLC had previously called an emergency meeting between federal government representatives and labour leaders and yielded a joint agreement to postpone the strike temporarily, enabling the implementation of the NLC’s demands.
The union informed that the National Executive Council (NEC) of the NLC has instructed all affiliate unions to direct their members to resume work on October 3, 2023, as the planned indefinite strike has been put on hold.
