The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) has commenced the fifth edition of its Water Savvy Kids Programme — a week-long water safety and swimming training aimed at promoting water confidence and safety awareness among school children in Badagry Local Government Area.

The initiative, which began on Monday, October 20, 2025, is part of LASWA’s ongoing advocacy campaign to reduce the fear of water and enhance safety consciousness among young Lagosians, especially those living in riverine communities.

Implemented in collaboration with the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) and the Dolphin Swim School (DSS), a leading aquatic training institution focused on empowering women and children, the program combines both theoretical and practical lessons on water safety, swimming techniques, and basic emergency survival skills.

According to LASWA, a total of 50 pupils drawn from five public schools in Badagry have been selected to participate in this year’s edition. The participating schools were chosen from communities where waterway transportation forms a major part of daily life.

Speaking on the initiative, LASWA noted that the program is designed to equip children with essential knowledge to stay safe while navigating Lagos’ growing network of inland waterways.

“As Lagos continues to expand its water transport infrastructure, it is crucial that young commuters understand how to remain safe and respond appropriately in emergencies,” LASWA stated.

The Authority emphasized that the Water Savvy Kids Program aligns with its long-term goal of building a safer, more confident generation of waterway users who are self-reliant, safety-conscious, and well-prepared to handle challenges on the water.

The training, which runs from Monday, October 20, to Friday, October 24, 2025, features certified instructors from DSS and experienced LASWA safety officers.
