The Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has demanded a thorough investigation into the killing of its former Vice President-General, Chief Alfred Etete, who was reportedly shot dead by gunmen at his residence in Agwut-Obolo, Rivers State.
In a statement issued on Monday, the union’s President-General, Comrade Francis Bunu Abi, condemned the incident, describing it as a brutal and senseless act. He called on security agencies to urgently apprehend and prosecute those responsible for the attack.
Etete, a former Vice President-General of MWUN from the Seamen, NIWA and Water Transport Branch, was said to have been a respected figure within the maritime labour movement. Until his death, he was also regarded as a prominent community leader in Agwut-Obolo.
Reacting to the development, Bunu said the news of Etete’s killing came as a shock to the union. He described the late labour leader as a committed unionist whose years of service were marked by discipline, loyalty and dedication to duty.
According to him, Etete remained actively involved in community affairs after retiring from union service, contributing his experience to grassroots development in his hometown.
The MWUN president-general further stated that the union would not relent in its demand for justice, insisting that those behind the killing must be brought to book. He urged the police and other security agencies to act swiftly to ensure that the perpetrators are identified and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The union also extended its condolences to the family of the deceased, praying for strength to bear the loss.
