In a strategic move to enhance passenger safety on Nigeria’s inland waterways, the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has entered into a partnership with Coronation Life Assurance Limited to provide insurance coverage for travelers across its 42 docks and loading points in Rivers State.
The initiative, championed by the President-General of MWUN, Comrade Francis Bunu Abi, is being executed in collaboration with Multijanc Concept Limited, serving as consultants to the agreement. The tripartite arrangement brings together MWUN, Multijanc Concept, and Coronation Life Assurance Limited to offer critical protection for passengers in the event of medical emergencies, permanent disability, or death arising from accidents during waterway transportation.
According to the union, the insurance scheme is a proactive measure to mitigate the risks commonly associated with water transportation, particularly in the riverine areas where boat mishaps have become a recurring concern.
“This partnership underscores our unwavering commitment to safeguarding the lives of not only passengers but also the boat operators who work under our jurisdiction,” the union stated.
The insurance coverage will be extended to all travelers using MWUN-controlled routes in Rivers State, ensuring that in the unfortunate event of an accident, affected individuals or their families will receive financial support to cushion the impact.
This development reflects the union’s continued drive to prioritize safety and welfare in the maritime sector, while also aligning with broader efforts to professionalize and regulate water transportation in Nigeria.
