The National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders (NAGAFF) has offered to apartner with the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) to reduce smuggling at Jibia border, Katsina State.
The Chairman of Board of Trustees of the association, Mr Chidiebere Enelama, made the promise in a statement in Lagos and stressed that “smuggling activities is a cause for concern’’.
He said NAGAFF was pleased that the Comptroller-General of Customs, Alhaji Abdulahii Dikko, had given an order that smugglers at Jibia border be shot on sight.
“We hope this will help in checking the alarming and unwholesome activities at the border,’’ Emelama said, even as he urged the comptroller-general to deploy functional scanners at the border.
“This will help in no small measure for revenue and security purposes of Nigeria,’’ he said.
The chairman said the membership of NAGAFF in the North-West zone had risen to 1,500.
“We are moving up to the North-East borders equally to enthrone freight business.
“We stand by our earlier pledge to create 5,000 jobs for the youths of the North before the end of the year 2013,’’ he said.
According to the association, “in line with the request of the Customs Area Controller (CAC) Yusuf Umar of Katsina Command that Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents AnLCA and other sister freight associations should come forward to establish their presence in Jibia border with a view to raising the bar of due compliance to import regulations, we at NAGAFF are also making efforts to ensure constructive partnership with stakeholders at the border”.
It also pleaded with the Minister of Finance, Comptroller General of Customs as well as  the Managing Director of Cotecna Destination Inspection Services to ensure that scanners are made to function effectively as deployed, stressing that this will aid revenue collection and also serve security purpose.
