The National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders (NAGAFF) has charged the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency(NIMASA),the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) and the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA)to give a breakdown of revenue generated on behalf of the government to the Nigerian public on a monthly basis.
The National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders (NAGAFF) has charged the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency(NIMASA),the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) and the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA)to give a breakdown of revenue generated on behalf of the government to the Nigerian public on a monthly basis.
The association also said that apart from the Nigeria Customs Service as an agency of government in the sector, no other agency in the maritime sector has come out to tell the public about its revenue generation profile.
National President of the NAGAFF, Chief Eugene Nweke who gave the advise in his office in Lagos last week , said that despite the huge criticism of the activities of the Nigeria Customs Service, the agency has always told Nigerians it revenue collections activities.
Nweke noted that the assignment given to an agency like NIMASA is too much for it to handle and the source of revenue is enormous ,therefore there is the need for the populace to know about the revenue it generate on a monthly basis.
The NAGAFF boss also asked: "what is the source of revenue of NIMASA and what is their revenue target par month in the average?"
"Or is NIMASA working for some set of people aside working for Nigerians? Is it not a Nigerian government agency? And if the Nigeria Customs service can show us there revenue performance every month by making it open, then nothing stops NIMASA,NPA and NIWA from pushing their revenue collection to the public" ,Nweke suggested.
According to him, these maritime agencies generate huge revenue for government, but it is not for public consumption because of the political interest.
He argued further that the lack of information on revenue generation by these agencies has hampered the growth of the Local Content Act even as he added that revenue generated by NIMASA alone is enough to power the Cabotage Vessel Finance Fund (CVFF) without any assistance from the banks and the Federal Government.
