On Thursday, 4 September 2025, participants of Naval Warfare Course (NWC) 9, led by the Commandant, Naval War College Nigeria (NWCN), Rear Admiral Akinola Olatunde Olodude, presented a research paper titled “Artificial Intelligence and Maritime Security Operations: Options for the Nigerian Navy” to the Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla, at Ezeoba Hall, Naval Headquarters, Abuja.
The paper was formally delivered on behalf of the participants by Commander Adetayo Yusuf Adesokan and Commander Owonam Una Equere. The well-researched and excellently presented work addressed the germane issue of integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) into naval strategy and maritime security operations.
Specifically, the research examined the role of AI in tackling pressing maritime challenges such as crude oil theft, piracy, smuggling, illegal fishing, and overall maritime domain awareness. It also highlighted global best practices, assessed opportunities and limitations, and proposed strategic options for the Nigerian Navy (NN) to adopt AI in a phased, sustainable, and cost-effective manner.
The purpose of the paper was to explore how AI can be leveraged to enhance operational efficiency, improve decision-making, and strengthen Nigeria’s maritime security architecture. After carefully taking the audience through the issues related to the topic, the presentation concluded with realistic and actionable recommendations to both the Federal Government and the NN.
At the end of the presentation, participants of NWC 9 presented a bound copy of the research work to the CNS, who commended their efforts, describing the paper as a valuable contribution to contemporary naval thought and strategic planning. He further urged the officers to continue pursuing intellectual excellence and innovative solutions to Nigeria’s maritime security challenges.
