The Nigerian Defense Academy NDA has requested the partnership of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency towards the establishment of a centre for Maritime Security Studies in the military institution.
The request was formally submitted to the Agency by the Academic Provost of the Agency the NDA, Professor Sunday Okeniyi at a recent courtesy call on the Management of the Agency.
Professor Okeniyi explained that the invitation extended to the Agency was in recognition of the Agency’s promotion of maritime security for the enhancement of safe shipping.
Okeniyi emphasized that the center would be dedicated to building maritime capacity for the identification, mitigation and management of sea-based threats in Nigerian waters
In his response, the Director-General, NIMASA, Mr Ziakede Patrick Akpobolokemi expressed excitement at the request extended to the Agency by the Nigerian Defense Academy for the establishment of a Center for Maritime Security Studies.
Akpobolokemi maintained the need for co-operation between the Agency and the Military Services for the actualization of anti-piracy campaigns being coordinated by the Agency.
He stated that the Agency will make appropriate considerations of the request within the ambit of fiscal framework of the Agency in the New Year, 2013.
The NIMASA boss observed the need for exchange of programmes between the NDA and the Agency with a view to the exchange of data and experiences between the workforce of both institutions.
Mr Akpobolokemi condemned the role of few Nigerian elites in the sponsorship of sea-based theft and robbery, hence the need for inter-agency co-operation against maritime insecurity.
‘Petroleum products theft had before now assumed worrisome proportions, but we have set ourselves against the sponsors, who must not win’ the Director-General maintained.
It will be recalled that the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency had established four Maritime Institutes in selected Nigerian Universities.
The Universities include the University of Lagos; University of Nigeria, Nsukka; The Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai and the Niger Delta University, Amassoma, Bayelsa State
