The Managing Director of Nigerian Ports Authority, Engr. Omar Suleiman, has stressed the need for collaboration between Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) and Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) with a view to combating piracy, terrorism, pollution and other maritime vices in the West African sub-region.
Engr Suleiman stressed this in Lagos yesterday while receiving the Acting Director General of Ghana Ports and Habours Authority, Engr. Richard Anamoo who paid him a courtesy visit.
The Managing Director pointed out that insecurity, pollution and other maritime challenges know no boundary, nor speak any language, adding that the presence of these marine vices have negative effects on shipping activities in the sub-region.
He therefore called for the increased investment on maritime security by member countries of Ports Management Association of West Central Africa (PMAWCA) in other to make the ports in the sub- region more attractive to ship chatterers and other investors.
He stated that a well-secured port system would reduce the high premiums on insurance and other associated costs thereby reducing port charges on cargoes destined to the ports within the West and Central African sub-region.
Earlier, the Acting GPHA boss; Mr. Anamoo had told the Managing Director that his team was in Nigeria to seek ways of improving the long- standing relationship between Nigeria and Ghana, so as to boost the countries’ common interest on maritime matters.
Mr. Anamoo thanked Nigerian Ports Authority for always coming to the aid of Ghana Ports and Habours Authority whenever any request is made.
