In the latest global ranking released by Lloyd’s List Intelligence, not a single Nigerian port secured a spot in the top 100 ports worldwide.

Despite Nigeria boasting numerous sea terminals such as Apapa port, Tin Can Island port, Calabar port, Warri port, and Port Harcourt port, none managed to make the prestigious list.

Lloyd’s List Intelligence highlighted that the port of Lome, Togo, once again outperformed Nigerian ports by claiming the 94th spot in the ranking. This marks the third consecutive year that the Togolese port has earned a place in the top 100, maintaining its position as the sole West African port on the list.

Furthermore, the report revealed that nine out of the world’s ten largest ports are located in Asia, with six of them situated in China. China continued its dominance in the container sector, responsible for approximately 40% of the total cargo handled by the top 100 ports.

The top 10 ranking index featured the Port of Shanghai, China, at the number one position, followed by Singapore port in second place. The port of Ningbo-Zhoushan, China, secured the third spot, while the ports of Shenzhen, Qingdao, and Guangzhou in China ranked 4th, 5th, and 6th respectively. Additionally, the port of Busan, South Korea, claimed the 7th position, followed by the port of Tianjin, China, at 8th place. Hong Kong port in China and the port of Rotterdam in the Netherlands rounded out the top 10, ranking 9th and 10th respectively.
