In a bid to prevent flooding during the coming raining season especially in the southern part of the country, the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA)has announced plans to tackle the natural disaster.
The apex maritime regulatory agency has also disclosed that there will be massive awareness campaign programmes beginning from April to address the issue of flooding which occurred in 2012 and which rendered several persons homeless and destroying properties worth billions of Naira.

Head, Marine Environment Management Department of NIMASA ,Mrs Juliana Gunwa disclosed this at the South South International magazine’s 7th annual lecture and award which held in Lagos last Friday, even as she added that the first awareness campaign is coming up in Warri Delta State.
"We are trying to arrange for enlightenment programme, especially the one that is coming up in Warri, precisely on the 9th of April, NIMASA will be there to carry out some enlightenment programme to enlighten the general public and the grassroots on what they need to do to avoid upsurge of the ocean", Gunwa stated.
Gunwa who represented the director general of NIMASA, Mr. Patrick Akpobolokemi at the event, said in a paper titled; "how to sustain the development of the coastal region in the face of climate change” also noted that the agency has developed 12 marine environment regulations to aid the protection of the marine environment.
According to her, the use of ocean space and resources has been identified as essential component of global economic growth and prosperity.
She noted that mankind contributes to flood as a result of indiscriminate discharge of wastes into the waters.
