Following the continued allegations of unfair treatment emanating from the dockworkers operating at the eastern ports, the Nigeria Maritime and Safety Agency (NIMASA) Eastern Zone, has tasked terminal operators operating in the area to ensure that workers’ welfare package is enhanced.
This directive was issued recently in Port Harcourt at the end of a familiarization tour of the ports and visits to all stakeholders in the zone by NIMASA.

The new zonal coordinator of NIMASA, Mr Olayemi Abass and his team who visited the facilities belonging to the terminal operators; Integrated Logistics Limited (INTELS) in Onne Rivers State, said  that the visit is aimed educating stakeholders operating in the eastern zone on the roles and functions of NIMASA.
Charging the stakeholders on the need to uphold a good welfare package for the workers, Mr. Abass stated that “it is the concern of NIMASA to ensure that the welfare needs of dockworkers by Terminal Operators are not compromised”.
In a parley with the management of INTELS, Mr. Abass urged them to enhance dockworkers’ welfare and to make sure that they ensure safety in all maritime operations, he also emphasized on the need for stakeholders to obey and implement the principles of the Cabotage act.
Abass stated that NIMASA, as an agency is more than ever committed to ensure pollution – free maritime environment even as he advised  the terminal operators to introduce measures that will ensure accident – free operations at the Ports.
He urged Intels and other terminal operators to ensure good delivery of health services, canteen services, transportation and increased break hours for Dockworkers working with them, on marine environment.
Abass and his team were received by the General Manager of Intels, Mr. Sascha Kuechl, who represented the Managing Director of the company. He later briefed NIMASA team on Integrated Logistics Company operations at the Onne Ports.
