NIWA Installs Water Buoys in Niger, Kwara to Boost Navigational Safety

The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has enhanced navigational safety by installing water buoys along the waterway from Gbajibo in Niger State to Gbajibo-Mundi in Kwara State.

A statement issued by NIWA on Tuesday, March 11, 2025, confirmed the deployment of 10 red buoys and six green buoys. These buoys serve as essential markers, guiding water users through safe navigation channels, warning of potential hazards, and designating protected areas.

Suleiman Makama, Assistant General Manager (Corporate Affairs), issued the statement, reaffirming NIWA’s dedication to ensuring safer waterways for all users.

NIWA highlighted that the river along this route is generally deep, with a minimum depth of 21.3 meters. The initiative aligns with the authority’s ongoing efforts to improve water transport safety.

This move follows the commitment of NIWA’s Managing Director/CEO, Mr. Bola Oyebamiji, FCIB, who, during the 2025 management retreat, stressed the need for stricter safety regulations and improved operational efficiency across Nigeria’s inland waterways.
