Prominent indigenes of Andoni in Opobo Local Government Area of Rivers State have commended President Goodluck Jonathan for recently christening Nigeria’s first indigenous naval warship after the ancient town of Andoni. The Naval warship was christened NNS Andoni.
The commendation came on the heels of the recent unveiling and naming of the new Seaward Defense Boat (SDB), built by the Nigerian Navy.
Our correspondent in Port Harcourt confirmed that the name of the war boat “NNS Andoni’ was a name adapted from Anodoni, a nation in Andoni Local Government Area of Rivers Sate.
Although some prominent citizens of Andoni were in attendance to witness the historic event in Lagos, back home, some citizens of Andoni has been commending President Goodluck Jonathan for the gesture.
In an interview  with Shipping Position Daily in Port Harcourt  last week, the Andoni Local Government Chairman Hon Orom Nte Ereforiouma describe President Goodluck Jonathan’s gesture as a welcome development, stating that the action has given Andoni people a sense of belonging.

Another prominent son of Andoni Nation, Dr. Gogo – Mary Oyet, Head of Environment, Health, Safety/ Security of Oando Group PLC, said that NNS Andoni is the first indigenous warship ever to be produced by the Nigerian Navy in the West African Sub region. He added that with the introduction of NNS Andoni, that the Andoni Nation will continue to receive global attention where ever the war ship sails to , and applauded President  Goodluck Jonathan for the gesture.
Also contributing, the Media Aid to Andoni Local Government Chairman who pleaded anonymity said that by naming the warship after Andoni, President Jonathan has recognized Andoni as a front line coastal community in Niger Delta.
He said that it is an appropriate honor to Andoni people, because according to him, Andoni Harbors most of the nations offshore – Oil platforms that generate revenue for the country.
