NPA Hands Over Ikorodu Terminal To Customs

Nigerian Ports Authority last weekend formally handed over its Ikorodu Lighter
Terminal which is located in Ikorodu; a Lagos suburb to the Nigeria Customs
Service at a ceremony which was witnessed by a cross section of stakeholders,
including top officers of both NPA and Customs.
The terminal;  an offshoot of the Tin Can Island Port, Lagos is already being
used by the Nigeria Customs Service as a facility for securing overtime cargos
in Lagos ports and decongest the ports. Last week’s handing over marks the
beginning of a new era for the terminal which has for many years served the
Customs and also helped to decongest Lagos ports.
Speaking at the ceremony, managing director, NPA, Mallam Abdusallam Mohammed
recounted how Customs moved into the terminal in 2006 following the
recommendation of the presidential committee on port decongestion and
subsequent presidential approval.
The managing director who was represented by the general manager in charge of
security, Col. Samuel Folorunsho (rtd) acknowledged that port concession has
made NPA to lose its storage facilities and that the Ikorodu facilities have
greatly assisted in warehousing unclaimed and seized containers.
Items handed over to Customs included: 14.8 hectares of paved stacking area
and 1.2 warehouse space including one 160KVA generator.
Responding, representative of the Comptroller General, Customs, Mrs. Rhoda
Akor expressed readiness of the Customs to put the terminal into efficient
administration of the nation’s seaports, even as she expressed appreciation to
NPA for the gesture.
“Nigerian customs is grateful for this handing over today, we are ready to
take over and we believe we will run the place as we ought to do, we will not
let the nation down”, she assured.
