NPA vs INTELS: Workers Union Says INTELS Sacked Many Workers

The Senior Staff Association of Statutory Corporations and Government Owned Companies (SSASCGOC) has said that INTELS Limited had sacked its workers three times between 2016 and 2017.
The union’s Deputy President General and former president of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) Branch, Comrade Umar Omezia Jimoh said that the termination of the pilotage contract between the NPA and INTELS would not affect the workers as much as INTELS is propagating in order to attract sympathy from stakeholders.
Speaking with Shipping Position Daily in Lagos last week, Comrade Omezia said that, “as at today, INTELS do not have up to 11,000 workers, they have sacked their workers three times between last year and this year, and this was when the contract was still with them, so now that they don’t have the contract, it is not reason for them to say they would sack”
“Now, I don’t think there is any reason for them to sack because, already, they have reduced their staff strength drastically because of the downward trend of oil price, this was what they told us, if there is any need for sack, they would come to the union and negotiate, there and then they would tell us the reason why they want to sack”, he said.
Meanwhile, after originally threatening to take legal action against the Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA), Intels Nigeria Limited has now backed down and agreed to respect the FG’s Treasury Single Agreement (TSA) policy.
The majority shareholder of the company, Gabriele Volpi, last week apologized to the federal government and the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) over the incident which led to the termination of the Pilotage Agency Agreement between his company and NPA.
