The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Mr. Adegboyega Oyetola, has arrived in London to lead Nigeria’s delegation at the 33rd session of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) General Assembly, taking place from November 27th to December 6th, 2023. The theme, “MARPOL at 50, which is, “Our commitment goes on,” underscores IMO’s enduring commitment to environmental protection in shipping.

Mr. Ismail Omipidan, the Minister’s spokesman, conveyed the information via his official X handle that other delegation members include Dr. Magdalene Ajani, Permanent Secretary of the ministry; Babatunde Bombata, Director of Marine Safety and Security; and Dr. Bashir Jamoh, Director General of NIMASA.

The IMO General Assembly, held every two years, provides a platform for Oyetola to convey Nigeria’s message and actively contribute to shaping global maritime policies. The outgoing President, Mr. Antonio Manuel Lagdameo, will open the meeting, and the Secretary-General, Mr. Kitack Lim, will address the assembly.

Activities include the election of a new President, two Vice-Presidents, Chairs, and Vice-Chairs of Assembly Committees, with three Committees expected to be established. The IMO Awards Ceremony is scheduled for the first day of the Assembly on November 27th.
